Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the heart of the European Union. In the EU parliament all the decisions and resolutions are passed on the future of its people. The capital is another unmitigated example of the melting pot of different nations from people around the world, where tourists, businessmen or multitudes of migrants determine its pace.
Outside the capital, the country is divided into two major parts – Flanders that speaks Dutch with the variety of dialects and Wallonia that uses French as its mother tongue. There is also the tiny German part adjoining its eastern neighbour which communicates in the Germanic lingo. Historically the Flemings adopted the language of the Netherlands (the Dutch or its variation called Flemish) but their culture varies greatly from its northern neighbourhood. The heritage of its Catholic past, left many spectacular churches and abbeys, whose Trappists monks for centuries gave hope and solace to the people but presently are mostly known by the vast array of popular Trappist beers. Belgium, as some people claim, offers about 300 varieties of the hop beverage which is quiet impressive for such small country.
Another distinctive trait of Belgian culture is the leaning towards art, where music or paintings are manifested in their daily lives. From graffiti which decorate streets of many towns to museums and churches hiding the paintings of many great artists (i.e.Rubens).
