Matang Mangrove forest is the biggest of its type in Malaysia. It is a stretch of land of about 40 000 hectares.

Around 18000 hectares of the mangrove forest is used in commercial industry. Mainly in production of charcoal and building. When part of the forest is chopped down new saplings are planted. After 15 and then 20 years the part is cut down again removing only the thickest trunks and after 30 years the part is completely removed and the process starts again.

The rainforest of this part of Borneo has some of the highest rates of endemic plants and animals. It means they will be lost forever. Construction of the dam required the relocation of around 10 000 indigenous people.
